Functional mushrooms are showing up in more places than ever.
What was once primarily a supplement category now extends into beverages, coffee alternatives, powders, functional foods and other everyday wellness products. For brands, that creates an exciting opportunity to bring mushrooms into new occasions and reach new consumers.
But there is a difference between identifying a market opportunity and successfully formulating a product.
Mushrooms need to work in the finished product.
That challenge helped inspire FungiFuse™, Aloha Medicinals’ line of ready-to-use functional mushroom solutions designed with today’s product developers in mind.
Consumers Are Taking Mushrooms Beyond Supplements
Nutrition Business Journal (NBJ) data illustrates how quickly the functional mushroom category is evolving.
In a survey of more than 8,000 consumers, 37% reported consuming foods and beverages enhanced with functional mushrooms, compared with 27% who consumed mushroom supplements.
NBJ also reported that mushroom-enhanced functional food and beverage sales exceeded $700 million in 2023, nearly twice the size of the functional mushroom supplement market reported for the same year.
That creates opportunities well beyond traditional capsules and tablets.
Functional beverages. Coffee alternatives. Wellness shots. Powders. Bars. Gummies. And potentially applications that have not yet reached the market.
For ingredient suppliers, however, this expansion raises an important question:
Are mushroom ingredients being developed for the products brands actually want to make?
The Formulation Challenge
Putting a mushroom ingredient into a capsule can be relatively straightforward. Moving that ingredient into a beverage or food system can introduce additional considerations.
Flavor, solubility, texture, color and mouthfeel can all influence the finished product experience.
This is particularly important as brands combine multiple functional ingredients into increasingly sophisticated formulations. Every ingredient has to earn its place in the formula without creating unnecessary formulation challenges.
At Aloha Medicinals, we saw an opportunity to approach mushroom innovation from the perspective of the product developer.
Instead of simply asking which mushrooms should be combined, we asked:
How can we make functional mushrooms easier to use?
Introducing FungiFuse™
FungiFuse™ is a line of ready-to-use functional mushroom solutions developed around three core formulation attributes:
Neutral Flavor. Highly Soluble. Full Functionality.
The goal is simple: help brands incorporate functional mushrooms into modern wellness products while reducing some of the traditional sensory and formulation challenges associated with mushroom raw materials.
FungiFuse™ currently includes four targeted solutions:
FungiFuse™ Focus
Lion’s Mane • Cordyceps • Chaga
A purpose-built mushroom combination for products positioned around focus and cognitive performance.
FungiFuse™ Energy
Cordyceps • Shiitake • Lion’s Mane
Developed for active lifestyle, energy and performance-oriented formulations.
FungiFuse™ Daily
7-Mushroom Blend
A broad-spectrum mushroom solution designed for everyday wellness products.
FungiFuse™ Relax
Reishi • Maitake • Turkey Tail
Created for formulations positioned around relaxation, balance and everyday recovery.
And because innovation rarely fits neatly into a predetermined box, custom FungiFuse™ solutions can also be developed around a brand’s specific formulation and product objectives.
Why Blends Matter
FungiFuse™ also aligns with a broader shift in how consumers are approaching functional mushrooms.
NBJ’s publicly available 2024 Mushroom Market Report overview states that consumers overwhelmingly prefer mushrooms in combination formulas with other mushrooms and botanicals.
NBJ projected mushroom combination formulas to reach nearly $70 million in sales in 2024 and grow approximately 16% annually through 2027.
For product developers, combination formulas create an opportunity to move beyond a single recognizable mushroom and develop a more intentional product concept.
Instead of adding Lion’s Mane simply because consumers recognize the name, for example, a formulator can begin with the desired product positioning and select a mushroom combination developed around that objective.
That is the thinking behind FungiFuse™.
Start With the Product, Not Just the Ingredient
Perhaps the biggest change taking place in functional mushrooms is a change in perspective.
The industry has traditionally started with the raw material:
Here’s a mushroom. Where can we put it?
The next generation of innovation can start somewhere else:
Here’s the product we want to create. Which mushroom solution will help us build it?
That distinction becomes increasingly important as functional mushrooms move into beverages, foods and other applications where taste, solubility and the overall consumer experience matter.
For Aloha Medicinals, FungiFuse™ represents an evolution from being simply a supplier of mushroom ingredients toward becoming a formulation partner.
We bring decades of mushroom cultivation and ingredient expertise. Our customers bring the product idea.
Together, we can determine what comes next.
Neutral Flavor. Highly Soluble. Full Functionality.
FungiFuse™ is built to help functional brands take mushrooms further.
